About Bader Settlement

The Bader Settlement was established in about 1860 by Joe Bader I, an original Castro colonist, five miles west of Castroville on the Old Spanish Trail. About 14 families and individuals settled the area in the 1800s: Joe and Louis Mehr, Louis and Wilfred Moehring, George and Anthony Burger, Louis Burger, Edmund Haby, August and Nick Hutzler, Adolph Biediger, John Carle, Dominic and Paul Schott, Adolph Schmeider, August and Dominic Rohrbach, Joe Riff I, Henry Schulte and Willie Reitzer. In the late 1800s, Bader had a one-room schoolhouse, but by 1915, all of the children attended school in nearby Dunlay. Bader Settlement was primarily a farming area with the major crops being corn and cotton.
