About New Fountain

New Fountain is located about six miles northeast of Hondo. Most of its early settlers came from Germany during the first half of the 19th century. New Fountain was not divided into town lots like Quihi, but tracts were bought from Henri Castro or his representatives. The first group of immigrants settled on the banks of the Hondo Creek.

Local legend says that severe drought and water shortage forced them to move east to the banks of Verde Creek and an area known as Soldaten Kemp, a place where soldiers often camped.

New Fountain never developed into a town, but the settlers always acted as a group. John Muennink opened a general store and served as postmaster. Later, C.J. Oefinger ran the store and post office. Gerd Muennink operated a gin for many years. Cotton and corn were the main crops grown in the community. The first school in the New Fountain community was built in 1878 on the banks of the Verde Creek a short distance from where the church is now located.
